Renter Equity is focused on moving families out of poverty and freeing up affordable housing for others who need it. To do this, we need to increase families’ incomes and assets. We use affordable housing to facilitate community building, asset building, and individual development supports.
We focus on building community, creating mechanisms for asset development, and use family coaching to provide individual supports to our families.
Families pay their rent on time, build and participate in community, identify their goals and vision for success, and create and follow action plans to earn Renter Equity deposits to save, or use toward their future.
We used focus groups, learning circles, and resident input to develop a family coaching model to work with families. Initial feedback from families has been that Renter Equity generates hope and confidence in gaining control of their lives.
Renter Equity meets families where they are to establish stability first. Then we work with families in empowering them to dream, breaking down goals into smaller attainable action steps through family coaching. Renter Equity helps families plan for their future.
We serve 109 units of Renter Equity affordable housing units (30-60% Area Median Income), and have 80 active member households in Over-the-Rhine. We currently serve over 200 individuals including 86 children. 97% of those we serve are African American.
We partner with families by using affordable housing to maintain contact with families. We build community and provide a foundation for families to dream, while our team of family coaches (who double as personal cheerleaders) take interest in and support families in those dreams.
Our family coaches will administer this project, overseen by the Executive Director. We actively track incomes, assets, and where members are along the Arizona Self-Sufficiency Matrix.
